Boma Restaurant Review, May 2008

Boma is a large, buffet style restaurant at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  You check in for the restaurant in the lobby.  You are given a pager which will work throughout the grounds of the lodge.  While you wait, you can meander through the elaborate lobby of the Animal Kingdom Lodge.  You can rest on large, comfy, cushioned chairs and couches.  If you wander outside you can see the wildebeest viewing area.  You can also stroll down to the Savannah overlook area.

You have to go downstairs to get to Boma.  You can either take the elevator, or walk down the more majestic stair/ramp way to the downstairs dining area.  Boma is decorated like an African marketplace.  There are tapestries and baskets decorating the ceiling.  The tables and chairs are wooden and metal carved pieces.  The wait staff is incredibly friendly and our waiter was humorous and a delight.  We had a selection of non alcoholic drinks to choose from including tea, soda, lemonade and bottled water.  Our daughter wanted water to drink; we chastised her saying “we’re paying for drinks on the plan so order something that costs money!”  To our surprise the waiter brought her a large bottle of Evian and said “there, now you’re all happy!”  We all were happy!

This restaurant is buffet style with meat dishes at one station to the right, potatoes, warm salads, and side dishes at another station, followed by fruit and chilled salads at the next.  Finally, my favorite, the dessert station is on the left.  There is also a children’s station complete with chicken nuggets, mac-n-cheese and other kid favorites.  It’s even low to the floor so they can see everything!  The food….where can I start.  It was delicious.  There were many strange foods that we all tried.  Some were wonderful…some were not!  Our favorite dishes were the Fufu (mashed white and sweet potatoes) and coconut/curry chicken soup.  Our least favorite was the watermelon rind salad and the grapefruit salad.  Our favorite dessert was the Zebra Domes (peanut butter filled chocolate truffle type things).

Overall, the atmosphere is lovely.  The food is wonderful.  The service is great.  I highly recommend taking the time to go to Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
